Statistics: Mean, Median, and Mode

Grade 6 · 10 worksheets

About this skill

A single number can summarize a whole data set — if you pick the right one. These worksheets teach mean, median, mode, and range one at a time, then together: finding a missing data value, reading dot plots and tables, solving word problems, and judging which average honestly tells a data set’s story. Students learn the procedures, but the real skill is the judgment — knowing when the mean misleads and the median tells the truth.

Teaching notes

  • Teach “fair share” for the mean with cubes or counters before the add-and-divide procedure; it makes the procedure mean something.
  • The most common error is finding the median of an unordered list. Sorting the data first should be a non-negotiable written step.
  • Extend with class data — pets, siblings, shoe sizes — and let students argue for which average represents the class best.
