Linear Equations

Grade 8 · 10 worksheets

About this skill

Solving linear equations is the core skill of eighth-grade algebra, and these worksheets build it in honest steps: two-step equations, combining like terms, the distributive property, variables on both sides, equations with fractions, and the special cases — one solution, no solution, or infinitely many. Error-analysis pages ask students to find and fix someone else’s mistake, and word problems and mixed practice make sure the skill survives outside a drill set.

Teaching notes

  • Keep the balance visible: whatever happens to one side happens to the other, written step by step, until inverse operations are automatic.
  • Sign errors when distributing a negative are the number-one killer. Slow that one step down and have students rewrite the distribution before solving.
  • Check in the original equation — not a simplified one — so a wrong early step can’t hide.
