Functions

Grade 8 · 10 worksheets

About this skill

A function is a rule with a promise: every input gets exactly one output. These worksheets test that promise in tables, graphs, and equations — is it a function, find the rule, evaluate inputs, graph linear functions, and tell linear from nonlinear. Rate of change and initial value get careful attention, and comparison pages put two functions side by side in different forms. Real-world pages close the loop: functions are how we describe anything that changes predictably.

Teaching notes

  • Start with input-output machines and tables; graphs and equations make far more sense once the rule idea is solid.
  • Two confusions to hunt: any graph is not automatically a function (the vertical line test settles it), and rate of change is not the starting value.
  • Extend by comparing two real offers — taxi fares, phone plans — shown in different forms and asking which is better and when.
