Equivalent Fractions

Grade 4 · 9 worksheets

About this skill

Different fractions can name the same amount, and seeing that is the key that unlocks comparing, ordering, and eventually adding fractions. These worksheets start with visual models and number lines, then teach students to build equivalent fractions by multiplying, find missing numerators, use one-half as a benchmark, compare and order fractions, simplify, and solve word problems. The through-line: equivalence is about the size of the pieces, not the size of the numbers.

Teaching notes

  • Fold paper strips and draw bars before touching numbers — students must see that 2/4 covers the same space as 1/2.
  • The classic error: adding the same number to the top and bottom (“add 1 to both”). Equivalence multiplies or divides; it never adds.
  • Quick check: place both fractions on one number line. If they don’t land together, they aren’t equivalent — no argument needed.
