Greek and Latin Roots

Grade 5 · 9 worksheets

About this skill

One root can unlock a whole family of words. Each of these worksheets goes deep on a single Greek or Latin root — port (carry), scrib (write), dict (say), ject (throw), rupt (break), vis (see), tele (far), graph (write) — with words built on it, and a roundup page mixes five of them. Students who learn to spot the root stop memorizing vocabulary word by word and start decoding words they’ve never seen.

Teaching notes

  • Teach one root deeply with a word web on the wall; eight roots learned well beat thirty skimmed.
  • The mistake to avoid is pure memorization of definitions. Every lesson should end with an unfamiliar word the root helps decode — that’s the payoff.
  • Extend with a root of the week: students log words they meet in other reading and report the root sighting.
