Grade 6 · 8 worksheets

About this skill

Algebra starts with translation: turning words into symbols and symbols back into words. These worksheets write expressions from phrases, describe expressions in words, and evaluate them — including two-variable expressions — before moving into one-step equations solved by addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students check solutions by substitution, tackle equation word problems, and finish with mixed review. The thread through all of it: a letter stands for a number, and the rules never change mid-problem.

Teaching notes

  • Teach the phrases cold, especially the reversals: “5 less than x” is x - 5, and that single flip causes more errors than any computation.
  • For equations, insist on the same operation on both sides, written out — mental shortcuts hide the imbalance until it becomes a habit.
  • Check by substitution every time: plug the answer back in and make both sides match before moving on.
