Integers

Grade 6 · 10 worksheets

About this skill

Integers give students a language for opposites: temperatures below zero, floors below ground, money owed and money saved. These worksheets plot integers on the number line, find opposites, compare and order positives and negatives, and tackle absolute value — distance from zero — in and out of real situations. True-or-false reasoning pages push students past procedures to explain why a statement about negative numbers holds up or falls apart.

Teaching notes

  • Live on the number line: every comparison, order, and absolute-value question should start with a sketch of where the numbers sit.
  • The stubborn misconception: -8 must be bigger than -3 because 8 is bigger than 3. Debt language helps — owing $8 is worse than owing $3.
  • Quick check: give two negatives and ask which is closer to zero and why; the explanation is the assessment.
