2D and 3D Shapes

Kindergarten · 10 worksheets

About this skill

Kindergartners meet shapes by looking closely: counting sides and corners, sorting flat shapes from solid ones, and finding circles and triangles hiding in real objects. These worksheets name and draw 2D shapes, hunt for shapes around the room, compare squares and rectangles, and introduce cubes and spheres — always by their parts, not just their look. Naming a shape by how many sides it has is the first step toward geometry vocabulary.

Teaching notes

  • Start with real objects students can hold and sort; paper shapes come second.
  • The classic mistake: a turned square is “a diamond, not a square.” Show that rotating a shape doesn’t change what it is — count the sides together.
  • Extend with a shape hunt: students find and draw three classroom objects that match a target shape and explain how they know.
