Multi-Digit Multiplication

Grade 4 · 10 worksheets

About this skill

Fourth-grade multiplication gets big: two-digit by two-digit, three-digit by one-digit, and beyond. These worksheets build the skill in layers — area models and partial products first, then multiplying by tens and hundreds, estimating before solving, word problems, and mixed review. The strategies come before speed, so students understand why the standard method works instead of memorizing steps. By the final pages, students are choosing a strategy and checking their product against a sensible estimate.

Teaching notes

  • Keep area models and partial products in play until place value is automatic; rushing to the compact algorithm hides the mistakes you need to see.
  • Most errors are place-value slips and dropped regroups, especially in two-digit by two-digit problems. Require an estimate first — it catches most of them.
  • Quick check: ask for 4 × 19 as “4 × 20 minus 4.” Students who can flex like that own the skill.
