Sequencing

Grades 3–4 · 10 worksheets

About this skill

Sequencing is putting events in the order they happened — the backbone of retelling a story and of writing one. In these worksheets, students order familiar routines like growing a seed and making a sandwich, learn the signal words that show order (first, next, then, last), fix mixed-up stories, and sequence life cycles. The work moves from “what happens first?” to ordering whole passages and explaining why the order matters.

Teaching notes

  • Introduce order with the class’s own morning routine, and post the signal words where students can see them while they work.
  • The common slip is ordering by importance instead of by time. Ask “What had to happen before this could happen?” to reset the thinking.
  • Extend it: students write a four-step how-to for something they know well, cut it apart, and trade with a partner to reassemble.
