About this skill
Every passage is built around one big point, and the main idea is that point. These worksheets teach students to find it and to tell it apart from the details that support it. Students choose and match main ideas, title passages that have none, spot the detail that doesn’t belong, and read short passages at every grade level — from a single paragraph in first grade to multi-paragraph nonfiction in eighth.
Teaching notes
- Ask “What is this MOSTLY about?” before showing any choices, and keep the answer to a short phrase, not a sentence copied from the text.
- The classic mistake is picking a true detail that is too small to be the main idea — or grabbing the first sentence and stopping.
- Quick check: cover the passage and ask for the main idea in the student’s own words, then one detail that proves it.
