Formal Academic Writing
Grade 8 · 9 worksheets
About this skill
Academic writing has a shape, and these worksheets teach its parts: a thesis that makes a claim, transitions that show how ideas connect, and evidence that is quoted, paraphrased, and cited properly. Students write thesis statements, rescue weak ones, tell a thesis from a topic sentence, place transitions where they belong, decide whether a source needs quoting or summarizing, cite evidence like a scholar, and finally assemble a complete academic paragraph of their own.
Teaching notes
- Frame the thesis as a promise: everything after it must keep that promise. Revising weak theses together is the fastest way in.
- Two habits to break: announcing (“In this essay I will…”) and dropping in a quote with no explanation of how it proves the point.
- Check formality by reading aloud — contractions, slang, and “you” stand out instantly when a paragraph is heard instead of seen.
