About this skill
Every word has a biography. These worksheets trace how words travel — Latin roots that live on in everyday English, Greek words hiding in science, French words that arrived with kings, and Old English survivors we’ve used for a thousand years. Students follow word journeys across centuries, watch meanings change, and learn to use a word’s history to decode words they’ve never seen. It is vocabulary study that reads like detective work.
Teaching notes
- Start with a surprising word story — ask students where “muscle” comes from (Latin for “little mouse”) and let the groans do the hooking.
- Guard against the etymological fallacy: a word’s origin is not its current meaning. Meanings drift, and part of the fun is catching them at it.
- Extend it: each student traces one word from their own reading and presents its journey in four stops or fewer.
