Decimal Operations

Grade 5 · 10 worksheets

About this skill

Decimals are whole-number arithmetic with one extra discipline: respect the place value. These worksheets cover adding and subtracting to the hundredths, multiplying, and dividing decimals, with money problems, word problems for every operation, and estimate-then-solve pages that force a reasonableness check. Students line up decimal points, annex zeros where they help, and learn that a decimal answer can be checked the same way as any other — by asking whether it makes sense.

Teaching notes

  • Anchor hundredths in money: dimes are tenths, pennies are hundredths, and most students already trust that system.
  • The big mistake is lining numbers up on the right like whole numbers instead of lining up decimal points. Grid paper or a drawn place-value line fixes alignment fast.
  • Require the estimate out loud first — “about 6 plus about 4, so near 10” — before any exact computation.
