What's inside

  1. 1. A cart rolls down a ramp and hits a block of wood. If the cart moves faster, will it push the block farther or a shorter distance?
  2. 2. Experiment A: A cart released from 20 cm high pushes a block 15 cm. Experiment B: A cart released from 40 cm high pushes the same block 30 cm. Which cart had more speed at the bottom of the ramp?
  3. 3. A toy car moving at 2 meters per second hits a cup and knocks it over. A toy car moving at 4 meters per second hits the same cup. What is different about the collision with the faster car?
  4. 4. In three tests, a cart released from different heights pushed a wooden cube these distances: Test 1 (10 cm high): 8 cm pushed. Test 2 (20 cm high): 16 cm pushed. Test 3 (30 cm high): 24 cm pushed. What pattern do you observe between starting height and distance pushed?
  5. 5. A marble rolls down a ramp and hits a stack of five plastic chips. When released from 15 cm high, it knocks over 2 chips. When released from 30 cm high, it knocks over 4 chips. Predict how many chips will be knocked over if released from 45 cm high.
  6. 6. Two identical carts collide with a barrier. Cart A is moving at 1 meter per second and dents the barrier 2 millimeters. Cart B is moving at 3 meters per second. Using evidence about speed and collision energy, explain why Cart B will cause more damage than Cart A.
