What's inside

  1. 1. Choose a simple situation where two characters face a small problem or challenge together. Write one sentence describing the situation, the setting, and who the characters are.
  2. 2. Write the opening sentence of your scene. Include one sensory detail that helps the reader picture the setting.
  3. 3. Add two to three sentences that show what the characters are doing and how they are reacting to the problem. Use action verbs and keep the sentences moving.
  4. 4. Write a short line of dialogue where one character speaks to the other about the problem. Make the dialogue sound natural, like something a real person would say.
  5. 5. Add a dialogue tag or action beat that shows how the character said the line or what the character did while speaking. This helps the reader picture the moment.
  6. 6. Write a reply from the second character. Include a word or phrase that shows the character's emotion or attitude.
